Variable Speed Diving Systems (Battery Powered)


Our new Variable Speed technology has resulted in the world’s first floating, battery-powered hookah systems capable of supporting multiple divers to recreational depths for over an hour! Divers and boaters who prefer not to store and handle gasoline now have a cleaner and greener option for hookah.

Brownie’s™ new eco-friendly variable speed units revolutionize hookah diving. (Patent Pending) The Brownie’s Third Lung Variable Speed System (patent pending) provides a versatile, efficient and environmentally-friendly solution for all your diving needs.

A variable speed controller adjusts the compressor speed to match diver demand for air, reducing its speed when the need is low, increasing it when the need is high. This results in a considerable energy savings over conventional fixed speed devices.

It can be powered by either an AC power pack when installed on your boat or used on land where electricity is available, or with “quick change” (no tools required) batteries for all-day diving with the floating system tube.

The electric motor means carrying gasoline to power the compressor is no longer necessary and environmental impact is reduced by eliminating the carbon emissions.

Compared to all the gas powered units, the Brownie’s Variable Speed Systems produce about 40-50% less noise making these units even quieter than before.

Why Brownie’s Variable Speed Diving System?

For decades Brownie’s tested every viable compressor option available in an attempt to provide a floating battery powered alternative that would meet the Hookah market performance, logistics and ergonomic demands.

Literally dozens of compressor/motor/battery combinations where tested. The result was generally the same; either tremendous inefficiency leading to enormous battery packs or disappointing performance.

The VS invention overcomes these historical obstacles. The compressor speed instantly responds to diver demand accelerating from 0-2700 rpm’s in a matter of seconds. The VS quickly mirrors most any breathing pattern comes to a full stop during diver exhalation or time on the surface and then re-accelerates to full performance upon demand.

To date. fixed speed devices have proven to be fairly inefficient. Diver air consumption is highly variable and intermittent; breathing pattern and depth laying the major roles. The challenge was to develop a compressor system that could respond to the divers demand, regardless of breathing rate or depth.

Odyssey Batteries

Phenomenal starting power and massive deep cycle reserve power in one battery!

Some batteries provide enormous cranking power. Others, deep cycle reserve power. The revolutionary ODYSSEY® battery is designed to do both.

How is this possible? The answer begins with flat plates made of 99.99% pure virgin lead – not lead alloy. Pure lead plates can be made thinner, so we can fit more of them in the battery. More ODYSSEY battery plates mean more plate surface area. And that means more power – twice as much as conventional batteries.

In fact, ODYSSEY batteries are capable of providing engine cranking pulses in excess of 2250 amps for 5 seconds – double to triple that of equally sized conventional batteries, even at very low temperatures. And they can handle 400 charge-discharge cycles to 80% depth of discharge.

This extreme combination of power and performance makes ODYSSEY batteries perfect for a range of applications, including automotive/LTV, marine, commercial, and powersports.

Thanks to rugged construction and AGM (Absorbed Glass Mat) design, ODYSSEY batteries have an 8-12 year design life and a 3-10 year service life. Welded intercell connections enable it to withstand extreme vibration, and AGM design holds acid in place to prevent spills, even when installed on its side. And unlike conventional batteries, ODYSSEY batteries can be stored for up to 2 years and still be returned to full power.*

Unused Battery Space In Normal BatteriesLike many popular spiral-wound batteries, ODYSSEY batteries employ dry cell AGM technology to contain acid, allowing the battery to be installed even on its side. But the densely packed flat plates in an ODYSSEY battery avoid the “dead space” between cylinders in a “six-pack” design. The result is 15% more plate surface area — and that translates to more power!

Ready out of the box

ODYSSEY batteries are shipped fully charged. If the ODYSSEY battery’s voltage is 12.65V or greater, simply install the battery in your vehicle and you are ready to go! If below 12.65V, boost charge following the instructions in the ODYSSEY battery Owner’s Manual and/or Technical Manual. Putting a boost on the battery will not damage it, even if its voltage reads higher than 12.65V.

In the early phase of development of Brownie’s VS, consideration to accommodate a wide range of battery brands also spurred the analysis of a “batteries not included” business model. While simpler and potentially advantageous in the beginning, the analysis clearly demonstrated the value of maintaining control of product quality by providing the batteries.

Our second great invention incorporated into the VS is a novel Quick Change Battery system. The design focus was driven by weight feasibility, ergonomics and run-time dynamics.

Since most divers prefer dives longer than 30 or 45-minutes we created a system that provides dive times over one hour and a quick and easy method for exchanging batteries for those who desire multiple dives per day. The Quick Change Battery system has even eliminated cable connectors.

The VS Quick Change Battery system makes swapping to a fresh set of batteries, literally instantaneous; simply open the battery door lid by means of a one-finger latch pull; snatch the batteries from the fitted tray and re-insert a fresh set; shut the lid and the VS is running again.

The large brass spring-loaded contacts are ingeniously hidden in the base of the lid. A marine breaker/switch is connected in line to the VS with a time-delay program keeping the system completely ignition free. No tools or connectors are required to swap the VS/QC batteries.

When back at the dock, pool side or on a vessel with 110 or 220-240 volt AC power, the optional AC Power Supply fits directly in place of the batteries and will continuously supply power to the VS.
